Art

One of the main things that I worked on in Knight of the Wylds was its art and aesthetics. Our game is mainly story based and it’s set in a fantasy world, so I wanted to have fun visuals to help convey the fantasy and magic aspects we wanted to have the game revolve around. The game is entirely pixel art, and before this semester I had barely worked with this artstyle. I started out with paper and pencil concept art to help us all visualize the characters, and then moved on to create the sprites we can see within the game.

From the start, this was a learning experience, but one that was very valuable to me. I started learning more about pixel art by researching other artist’s learning processes, and getting advice from them through videos. This helped me get a general start, but at first it was difficult to make assets look how I wanted them to. I found that looking up pixel art and studying their shadows/shading, shapes, and general look helped me figure out how to better create what I wanted to. Throughout our production process, you can see an improvement in the quality of my sprites as I learned more about different techniques each week. I hope to have the opportunity to use these new skills in future projects

My art and art style had a lot of improvement throughout the semester, and I think that the art helps to provide an interesting world and interesting characters for the player to explore and interact with within our game. The character art, and especially the environment art, turned out to be a good addition to the game and it helps to tie things together along with the other aspects of the game.
